Karmann Ghia

Ever have a car in the back of your mind that you would secretly love to have in your garage? I’m pretty sure that all of us do. Usually these cars are bit off the beaten path and for the most part, would make most of you’re friends laugh hysterically at you. A side effect of living and breathing automobiles is that, like addictive drugs, there is always something else out there that you want to try. Some people may choose a vintage exotic, others perhaps old school V8 muscle, and yet others, like me would love to get there hands on a car that doesn’t even have 100 hp. You see I’m dying to get behind the wheel of a little VW Karmann Ghia, a car that in my opinion is one of the best looking out there. With a little massaging, new wheels and a hopped up engine I’m thinking that I could build a pretty wicked little strudel-burner out of one of these things and look damn good in it too. Sure, it’s not for everyone but then it doesn’t have to be. It’s got to suit my taste and my taste alone. So, now that you know my dirty little secret… what’s yours?

its between the Karma Ghia or the Volvo P1800 Coupe or Hatchback…. all 3 are gorgeous cars

Delorean without a doubt. Rip out that pathetic volvo engine and put in maybe a VR4 V6 or a 2.4 turbo from the SRT4. Then upgrade the turbo system to about 350 to 400HP which is easily done with either of these engines. Custom rims, Suspension, and ready for some gullwing steel fun.

I’m a big Ferrari guy, but something always told me that a Miata would just be an awesome car to blast around with. Maybe a turboed version would be some fun too…

Morris Minor Woody… definitely with a bigger engine and maybe even 4xd.

Ghias really are one of the best “fun cars” around. They’ve got their quirks, sure– don’t drive them in a light rain, natch –but are, on the whole, reliable and sturdy and ridiculously fun for something with an engine the size of a shoebox.

  7. João Paulo says:

Well, for the karmann “aficcionados” there is one in Brazil which has been tunned up with a V8 engine and Ford Ranger wheels. The exterior is pretty much stock but it became a little rubber burner in an inconspicuous body, The link to the pictures is: http://antigosmania.blogspot.com/2007/05/poderoso-karmann-ghia-68-com-motor-v8.html

Here’s two an Austin Healey 3000. The car just looks cool and a Volvo P1800 which is another car that has killer looks. Both are slow but there’s gotta be a way to drop a small v8 in of these.
