Volkswagen just announced a teeny-tiny 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The mill will debut in the VW Polo. It churns out 74 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. In the diminutive Polo, the engine returns 71.3 miles per gallon. Neat. But I think it’s worthless until somebody stuffs it into a VW Type 3 Squareback.
I could see that motor in a Squareback. Add a bigger turbo, open up the exhaust, add a hidden intercooler and you’d have a truly one of a kind hoonmobile.
