According to the Wall Street Journal, based on the rate at which it is currently selling, Honda is happily bracing themselves and shareholders for huge sales figures of their Insight Hybrid in the coming year. In the U.S. alone, this may amount to between 50,000 and 60,000 new Insights sold this year alone.

It should be noted that these numbers actually are below the early sales goals for the newest competitor to take on the Toyota Prius. Honda had initially expected to sell 90,000 units, however, sales in Japan have been even more brisk than anticipated and given the general malaise that has fallen upon the world’s automakers, even modest gains are reason to celebrate at this point. A spokesperson for Honda has since backpedalled on the companies earlier 90k target for the Insight saying, “The (annual sales target) refers to how much we eventually want to sell every year, but not necessarily in the first year.”
