Transportation Inspired Furniture – Good or Bad?

Posted in FAIL / Funny, Pop Culture by MrAngry | February 2nd, 2011 | 6 Responses |

I try to keep an open mind about certain things, I really do, but when I see things like this I find it hard. Now granted that I’ll be the first to say that I am not one of the art worlds grand admirers, which in all fairness is probably a good thing as my opinions tend to be a bit harsh. However with crap like this floating around, how can I not be. Take these two couches for example, the Carossa and the Calèche, two pieces that are part of the Pimp Souk Collection (that’s right, it says Pimp). According to the website the Carossa supposedly pays homage to a Moroccan wheelbarrow, but since when do wheelbarrows come with Dubs on them? The second piece, the Calèche (wagon wheel couch) is apparently meant to revisit the visual codes of a traditional Marrakchie carriage, something that I am sure is not to common outside Morocco.

Now aside from the native artist who created these, my question is, who in the hell would these pieces appeal to? You may also be asking yourselves why we’re covering such hideous things like wheelbarrow furniture here on Ridelust, and to that my answer is simple – they’ve got wheels on them. I just hope for the manufacturers sake that they don’t make these things in advance as I have a feeling that they’re going to have a lot of unsold inventory lying around.

Totally agree Russ – I’m a huge fan of those engine block tables. Now I just have to convince my wife to let me have one.

Different. I’m just thankful that someone decided to try something with an “automotive theme” that doesn’t contain flames or checkered flags. I remember several years ago, the F1 team Sauber had produced furniture/interior items out of spare parts – a wing element coffee table, a pendant light out of old carbon disk brakes. Now THAT was cool. A bajillion dollars…..but still cool.

Hmm…I thought an Avalon already WAS a couch on wheels. I’d rather have a big ol’ Brembo rotor made into a clock or something
