Please, it's a computer glitch, that's pretty obvious by now. When these problems continue after "fixing" all these accelerators, then finally maybe some stronger action will be taken.

First of all, if your parents are driving a car intended for U.S. roads in most of Europe, they are unsafe regardless of the mechanical issues the car may or probably does not have. Driving on the left side of the road in a left side driver seat reduces visibility along the median of the road and limits a driver's view of oncoming traffic. It's a wreck waiting to happen.

It happened with my 2000 Lexus GS300. I bought it in 2005 and the accelarator was stuck in 2007 going 30-40 mph. Happened 2nd time in Jan 2010 when my college aged daughter floored the pedal on the highway to pass.
In 07 it was not public. I took it to the dealership where I had purchased it certified-pre-owned. They said they couldn't reproduce the problem. I still have the repair invoice saying it was probably the mat. Now that it happened with my daughter (without a mat), I called the dealership and they said my model & year are not identified as having this problem. Well I identified it!! Good thing my daughter and I survived each incident without a scratch on the car. What if it happens again? I'm in NC in the US. What's weird is that it happened 2x in 5 years of ownership with about 70,000 miles driven.

My parents have a Toyota Corolla which they bought new in Canada and shipped to Europe where they use it when on vacation each year. What if it happens to them on a narrow mountain road? They are scared. Who will look after this in Europe now??

"Today, just a few short weeks after the lawsuit was filed, Toyota has recalled the same group of vehicles affected by the flighty floor mats for a different issue: misshapen accelerator pedals."

Uhm, no, not just a few short weeks. Try several LONG years.
This has been an issue since 2001, and perhaps longer.
Toyota has been negligent in denying this to be anything but an engineering issue. Their claims of it being a "floor mat" issue is appalling, disgraceful, and caused so many untimely deaths. Toyota board members should be up on murder or at the very least negligent homicide charges, for ignoring this issue for so long!
The National Highway Transportation Authority has said Toyota "was misleading and deceiving".
I'm never purchasing a Toyota because of this. Same with Lexus.
