Galarraga Tigers

Over the past few days you may have heard about Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga and the perfect game he was robbed of Wednesday night during a game against the Cleveland Indians. With one out to go and after retiring 26 batters, Galarraga once again stepped to the plate to face Indian batter Jason Donald. The pitch was thrown and Donald hit a ground ball which was fielded by Miguel Cabrera the Tigers first baseman and then thrown to back to Galarraga who was covering first. What happened next was a call that will go down in the history books as veteran Umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe when he in fact, was out. He botched the call and thus cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game.

After the game Joyce admitted to blowing the call and said: “I just cost that kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay. It was the biggest call of my career.” Joyce was deeply saddened and apologetic for the missed call.

USA Today now reports that Mark Reuss, GM’s North American President and obvious baseball fan was not going to let Galarraga go away empty handed and decided that he deserved a brand new 2010 Chevy Corvette convertible in recognition of his perfect performance. I love a story with a happy ending…

Alright, not to rain on anyones parade, or to fault Armando Galarraga for taking it (hell, I wouldn’t turn down a free vette either) but seriously, why is a company that took gvt money to stay in business and still actually owes some of that money back, giving away product? Not only giving it away, but giving it to someone who could easily afford it on their own anyway?
