This Is Why More Police Departments Don’t Use Lamborghinis

Trust me, you're not going to outrun this cop car.

By now, everyone with internet access has seen the pics of the Lamborghini Gallardo used by the Italian State Police (Polizia di Stato). One of two donated by Lamborghini, it was actually used for traffic enforcement and emergency response on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway in southern Italy.

D'oh! Just imagine the paperwork.

I say “was used”, as these pictures show why a 500 horsepower exotic car is a bad choice for a police cruiser, even if it does have all wheel drive, lights and siren. I’d venture a guess that a Crown Vic Police Interceptor with a push bar on the front would have fared a little better in this accident. On the other hand, there wouldn’t have been much left of black Mercedes.

The driver won't ever live this one down.

The accident happened last November, when the distracted driver of a Seat Ibiza pulled out of this gas station without looking, directly into the path of the Lamborghini. The officer behind the wheel was clipped by the Seat, then swerved into a line of parked cars, including the Mercedes acting as a hood ornament. Want some irony? The Lamborghini was returning from a convention on road safety.

I wonder what he's driving now? A desk, probably.

Thanks to my buddy Dan for the pictures!

Most Cops are great drivers, highly trained and ready for nearly anything. That said, they’re still human. Put a Lambo in anyone’s hands, it WILL be hooned. Even if they’re not having a bit of fun, those switches and laptops and license plate checks still become really distracting when motoring down the road without external factors to ramp the attention level up. So… yeah, you’re right: Lambos aren’t practical for police use… But to me it’s def worth it! Sometimes, ya just gotta say FUCK practicality! I need more HORSEPOWER!! GRRRRR!!!!

    Looks cool, too.

Dave, when I lived in Colorado the CSP had Z28 Camaros and 5.0 Ford Mustang LX notchbacks as chase cars. It really made you think twice about running.

Unless you were coming back from a nooner with your girlfriend and were already late for work. And were riding a fast motorcycle on very familiar roads. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Hypothetically speaking, the statue of limitations on such supposed erm…
“actions” have surely run out. Hopefully? Because when you consider the differences between bikes and cars (just in our imaginations, yes?), even the fastest cars would STILL be slower than a moderately fast bike. In a straight line, or lane splitting, at least…And we could talk about certain past events if such events were far enough behind us, had they occured (hint: they did not occur).

All of this is hypothetical, of course. We’re just bench racing here…

The old “car versus bike” argument is a good one, and it really comes down to which car versus which bike. Generally speaking, bikes will out accelerate and out brake a car, but some cars actually have an advantage in cornering. On a tight track, with the right car, I’d give the nod to the car. Throw in some long straights, and I’d call the bike FTW.

Rider skill and driver ability still has a lot to do with it.

Agreed. I know I can straight line a lot of four wheeled killers out of the box, but I don’t want to mess with ‘em in the twistys. It’s really fun racing brand new Corvettes and beating them w/ a machine that’s worth less than 4 grand. Never have gone up against the ZR-1 or other rare breeds in that class, and I’m pretty sure that hot of a car would beat me almost right off the line. Soccer Moms and everyone else? LATER.
