It was hard not to like Ben Collins as The Stig. He had a commanding presence in his white Nomex suit and Simpson helmet with the iridescent visor, and it was clear that he could drive an automobile at 10/10ths. Even the obscure music he listened to (like the soothing tones of the vuvuzela) provided a source of amusement, so I was willing to give the guy a second chance. Maybe I’ll still do that on Fifth Gear, but one thing is certain: I don’t ever need to sit through another Ben Collins car review for The Sun newspaper. Not to be overly critical, but this video could be used to extract confessions from accused murderers, as it offers all the excitement of a political debate over zoning laws. In another country.
There’s a reason we don’t do video reviews on RideLust, aside from the fact that we don’t have the budget to afford an SD card, let alone a high definition video camera. They’re hard work, and it’s really tough to make them interesting; how, for example, can you point to a cupholder and say with enthusiasm, “Look! It’ll hold a twenty ounce bottle! Twenty freakin’ ounces! In the cupholder!”. You can’t do it, at least not without a script and a lot of practice, and while we appreciate readers suggestions, topless video car reviews aren’t in our budget either (but please, keep those audition videos coming). Matt Farah, of The Smoking Tire, is a guy who can do kick-ass video reviews. Matt Farah is a friend of ours, and Ben Collins is no Matt Farah.
