The Mercedes Non Diesel, Diesel Engine

Sounds a bit strange, well it is. There is not doubt that a diesel engine that does not use diesel fuel, has to be one of the strangest things that you are ever going to hear about in the engine department.

But buying diesel fuel from the service station is getting a lot harder these days. How many pumps of diesel do you see at your local service station?

So the clever guys hidden away deep within Mercedes Benz, have been toying with the diesel engine and have come up with an idea that has been named DiesOtto, with full working prototype and everything.

The DiesOtto engine is more exactly the same a classic diesel engine, but with one main difference, it does not run on diesel fuel, but rather Unleaded fuel, which is more available at service stations.

This engine that they have got running is a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine, it has a direct fuel injection system, with variable compression, turbo charging and something new – controlled auto ignition. The engine will return a mpg of nearly forty miles, while delivering 238 bhp. With figures like this you would think that the car that this power plant is meant for would be one of the smaller models, but no these figures are for the S class range, which brings it all into perspective.

Obviously this is early days yet, we have seen such claims before from other automakers as they bring in new ideas, but often they fail to make it into the range, maybe this one will!
