agree with turnosrt that sound really is a selling point of a car (hell i bought my car solely on the sound of the engine). my list is a bit different though

4 cylinder - nothing beats an old saab v4 monte carlo i know its a ford engine but imo it sounds better when those nutters at trollhättan had a go at them (also im swedish so i gotta say saab here ey ;D
5 cylinder - audi 90 imsa GTO a banshee howl that just makes my spine tingle
6 cylinder - tie between BMW e36 M3 and nissan skyline 2000gtr 69-72. the rhaspy sound of the nissan karburetta engine is flaweless but a skreamy m3 straight six isnt all that bad either
8 cylinder - three way tie between a lazy rumbling 60's hemi v8, twin turbocharged v8 in the F40 and this Judd v8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsGTBWmN41s
10 cylinder - lambo gallardo 570-4 supperleggera
12 cylinder - ferrari berlinetta boxer

honorable mentions to the old 1,4 liter turbocharged f1 engines and the 90's impreza rally cars

I consider sound to be one piece of the selling point pie so for me this is a good one. These are all based on factory exhaust.
4 cylinder - Dodge SRT4 Neon without a doubt. Thing comes from the factory without a muffler and just dual resonators and near redline the roar turns into a high pitched banshee scream. Oh and dont forget it spits fire at redline.
6 cylinder - TVR Sagaris. With its straight 6 engine design and around 400 horsepower it definately sounds mean.
8 cylinder - Tie between the Holden Maloo HSV R8 and Classic muscle car era MOPARS. This is very much opinion but the late 60s and early 70s mopars sounded just a lil bit meaner than comparative cars from the idle to the earth shattering throat they produced. The Maloo is a perfect representation of how chevy knows how to make motors and the less restriction the aussies have only amplified that.
10 cylinder - Havent heard the new vipers run yet but the old one (08 etc.) was pure bliss and the sound of one next to you measnt one thing "Your probably going to lose this".
12 cylinder and above - Can anyone even afford one of these anyway?
