2. Paris-Dakar Rally
The Dakar rally was originally an off-road rally event starting in Paris and proceeding to Dakar, Senegal. However, due to security concerns in Northern Africa, the race has been held in South America since 2009. Vehicles are truly off-road vehicles, not modified versions of vehicles built for tracks, as competitors cross 500-600 miles of dunes, mud, grass, and rock outcroppings daily. Over the history of the race, 61 people have died, many bystanders or support crew, and 28 competitors. A number of crews have also gotten lost on the extended journey.
