It’s not physically possible to take a test drive in a print ad, but Volkswagen’s ad agency in Norway has created the next best thing. Using a print ad and an iPhone app, the agency created a multimedia ad campaign that allows users to demonstrate VW safety features via their smartphones. Stray too far off the printed road, and the phone vibrates just like VW’s lane departure warning system. Turn into a corner, and the headlights turn to match the steering angle. Come up on another (virtual) car, and the adaptive cruise control keeps you following at a safe distance. The ad won’t amuse people for too long (unless they include a moose avoidance test), but it’s a great example of innovative thinking in advertising, which is something in short supply on this side of the pond.
