Corby, as long as you weren't blocking the left lane, the other drivers have nothing to bitch about.

With no air on and lowering my speed 60-65mpg on the freeway I was able to eek out 34.5 MPG on my 2010 Scion XB. Air on dropped it to 32.5.

I am sure I made a lot of people unhappy that had to pass me..

Dave, on a modern car it should have no adverse effect. I suppose you could wear out a starter sooner, but you'd have to encounter a lot of lights on your daily commute.

I'm not advocating shutting down at every light, but if you're stuck at one that's over two minutes in length you'll use less gas restarting than idling. Likewise, if you're at a railroad crossing, most freight trains take much longer than two minutes to pass the gates. Use your best judgement.

I know the article is strictly for saving gas, but isn't number 4 "Shut your engine off at long traffic lights" bad for your engine, with that constant restarting? BTW, I'm all for the VERY first one; Driving Naked Saves Weight. ;-)

Turning the engine off at a red light is all about judgement ability and should be a must when time is on your side. I turn mine off quite often at red light but also in traffic congestions.
Kurt, you do have the ability to post the best pictures around to introduce articles!!!
Way to go :)

Kurty? Aww, did Mr. Disappointed have a wittle bad day?

Neither one is bad advice if you want to save gas. The article wasn't titled "how to be as safe as possible behind the wheel".

Also, I'm assuming that RideLust readers have some driving skills. If you're not comfortable turning off your motor at a long stop light, don't do it. If your reaction time isn't good enough to follow (not draft, follow) a tractor trailer, don't do it.

....shutting the car off at a light is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of....

...and get up on a big rig, and you just might die.

bad advice Kurty

Gratuitous nakedness at the outset of this article makes the article only THAT much better.

I think I knew all this stuff...it's not like I listen, though! Especially about that slowing down thing. I'm not one to turn my car off at the light, unless I know for absolutely certain that the bozo behind me isn't going to do something stupid.
