If you’ve ever had the opportunity to drive a BMW 135i then you’ll no doubt agree with me when I say that the little car is an absolute hoot to drive. Its twin-turbo six is the best in the business, and when you combine that with a great suspension you have a car that will have you grinning from ear to ear.
BMW is now trying to capitalize on the 1-series by offering up an M version. Kay Segler, BMW Motorsport Division boss is definitely on the right track when he says:
“We want to make M young again, and affordable. My sons would like to have an M, and when they’re 40, not 60. We’re going towards affordability and freshness.”
As you can see from the pictures BMW is pushing the envelope with this little guy. Big flared wheel arches house what look to be 19 inch wheels and tires with big vented brakes. The entire look and feel of the 2011 BMW M1 definitely appeals to the younger audience the BMW is going to target with this car.
The front fascia has also been re-sculpted with a new front bumper and large air intakes. Power will come from the 535i’s 3.0-liter turbo charged inline-6, but will most likely incorporate two turbos instead of one. If BMW can manage to produce around 350 HP then the little coupe should hit 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. I’m excited to see the new 2011 BMW M1, because if it’s basically a 135i on steroids, than I’m all for it.
