Should states make Driving while Texting illegal?

So far Washington is the only state with a law on its books prohibiting drivers from texting while in a moving car. New York, California and Florida are discussing putting together similar legislation, but so far Washington was the first to set the precedent. A recent suvey was released that indicates that 89% of all those surveyed believed that texting while driving should be illegal. Of those in favor of legislation 57% also admitted to texting while driving (woopsiee..).

As might be expected the survey showed that the majority of the respondants to the survey who admitted to texting were between the ages of 18 and 34. While the legal pundits debate what the state should do concerning the legality of texting, some high school students have come up with their own pitch against Drive-by Texting.

While texting joins the list of so many other distractions that drivers face on the road it is questionable as to whether it is the worst of the bunch. Let’s review some of the other threats to fellow humans and non-humans:

-Rowdy Children
-Talking on a Cellphone
-Texting on a Cellphone
-Changing Clothes
-Smoking/Smokeless Tobaco
-Animals/Bears (just for Steven Colbert)
-Planes (thanks for the injuries, mom)
-Roadside Car Dealerships (is this just me?)

What kind of distractions can you think of? Should there be laws against all or any of these drivers distraction?
