The wild Texan, Carroll Shelby, has announced a new race and party to coincide with the rebirth of the Terlingua Racing Team; the first annual “Shelby Bullrun Challenge” to take place in West Texas on Sept. 25th-28th. The event includes a combination of driving events and parties for celebrities and enthusiasts that will be on the level of the ones that made Terilingua legendary back in the 60’s.

The Terlingua Racing Team was born after Ford asked Carroll Shelby to build a Mustang race car. His team created a competition version of the Shelby GT350 for that purpose. Around the same time, Shelby and some friends were enjoying the Terlingua area of the Texas Rio Grande region-living and partying hard.  These get togethers grew more popular and had everyone from Pancho Villa to Steve McQueen coming out to the desert to join in.

“We created the Shelby Terlingua Racing Team so our small group of rebels could have some real fun,” noted Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby Automobiles. “Now, I’m inviting a new generation to return with me for a weekend they’ll always remember.”

The Shelby Bullrun Challenge is open to any enthusiast in an original Shelby vehicle (including a Cobra, Series 1, GT350, GT500, Shelby GT, Dodge GL-H, Tiger, etc…) a Ford GT or Mustang.  Activities will include a challenging 350 mile rally, an open road 12 mile time trial, a competitive driving course on an airstrip and a 1/2 mile drag race in the Big Bend area. Other activities will include a car show, hole-in-one golf competition, Texas “shootout”, chili cook off and autograph sessions with Carroll Shelby.

“This will be an exceptional automotive event deep in the heart of Texas,” added Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “The Shelby Bullrun Challenge is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a small, intimate group with celebrities like Tom Yeager and Bill Neale, who was a co-founder of the group.  And we’re going to have high octane fun with some of the most fantastic cars on earth.  We’re even bringing some new Terlingua Racing Team supercharged Shelby Mustangs to test out.”

The event package includes a stay at the Lajitas Resort, one of the most exclusive locations in the Southwest, all meals, drivers’ welcoming dinner, final awards party, charity auction for special Terlingua and Shelby memorabilia and exclusive Team Shelby gifts. The price for the weekend is $2,500 (based on two drivers in shared accommodation). The package also includes a Team Shelby membership.

While it sounds very cool , I e-mailed one of the contacts {Samantha } to see about the chili cook off and car shows , spectator events , etc. and was not made to feel very welcome . In fact I was given the impression Mr. Shelby has little to do with this . Sounded like a bunch of rich kids out to make some quick $ and to hell with the folks who can’t afford the $2500 to stay or play . My friends and I may still take a drive up there but I’ve lost a lot of interest in it . Been to Lajitas and Terlingua and love the area and the people who live there , the promoters of this “bullrun ” clearly don’t live there or have spent much time there. They come off as a bunch of slick big city boyss and girls with too much money . It made me wonder how much Mr. Shelby had to do with the organization of it!

You know Jim, that seriously is one of the biggest tragedies about awesome cars like the Shelby Mustang – it seems like the only people who can afford them are douchebags. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve seen one roll up to a stoplight and who is behind the wheel? Some trust fund kid, with STD Barbie in the passenger’s seat.

I need to get myself a Shelby so I can go drive to TX and see how it’s done for real. This sounds like a kick ass time, and hey, can you really have a good time with out a real STD Barbies floating around? lol.
