People have been creating human powered submarines for years, in fact they’re really nothing new. Now it seems that another one has joined the ranks and it’s called the Subster. Developed by French designers Minh-Lôc Truong and Stéphane Rousson, the Subster actually just completed its first successful test run at a speed of 6.2 mph. Not a blazing speed mind you but when you consider that there is a person pumping away on a few pedals encapsulated in a long fiberglass tube, that’s pretty damn good.
The mini-sub uses a customized gear mechanism and belt drive unit from a Strida bike as well as controls located inside the pilot compartment to help move the Scubster in all manner of direction. If all goes well the Scubster team hopes to enter the International Submarine Race which will be held at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division, Bethesda, Maryland between June 27 and July 1, 2011.
