Now here is something worth bidding on. Up for grabs on Ebay is the car that is the inspiration for so many of GM’s future models from 1964 on. This is the 1964 Pontiac XP-833 Banshee Concept Car that was commissioned by Pontiac as a direct competitor to the then sales darling, Ford Mustang. Designed by John Delorean, the goal of Banshee was to be a great two seat roadster that would outsell the Mustang as well as be a good alternative to the Chevrolet Corvette. What’s amazing about this automobile though is that you can see no less than 4 different GM automobiles hidden within the lines of the Banshee.
For example, you’d have to be blind if you didn’t see the similarities between this and the, new for 1968 Chevrolet Corvette. Taking a look at the taillights reveals design queues found in the 1970 Pontiac Firebird, while the Banshee’s headlights seemed to have found their way onto GM’s sporty Opel GT.
There is no denying that the Banshee is a concept with a rich history. It’s been published in just about every GM design book and with less than 1,500 original miles on it, the car is a true piece of American automotive history.
There are currently 5 days left on this auction, and quite honestly I can’t imagine this machine selling for less that $100,000. So, my advice to you would be that if you have the means and wish to own a true piece of GM history, start bidding because cars like this rarely, if ever come up for sale. Good Luck.
