It’s been a bad couple of weeks for me, especially since my local cable provider doesn’t carry ESPN3. That meant no coverage of Sebring as the drama was unfolding, so I’ve been without racing since the Miami Grand Prix at the start of the month. That changes on Sunday, when the green flag drops on the 2011 Formula One season at the Australian Grand Prix. It’s televised on Speed TV starting at 11:30 Eastern on Saturday night, so be sure and set your DVRs in advance. Also, the IndyCar season opens on Sunday with the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. ABC has this one (unless it’s preempted by golf, women’s bowling or the midget transvestite curling world championships, all of which take priority over racing on network TV), so set your DVRs to tape the race Sunday at 1:30 Eastern. Just to make sure you’re pumped up for the start of the F1 circus, Mercedes-Benz gives us this bizarre and humorous video below.
That’s Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher exchanging bottles of wine and champagne, but you’d have to comb your memory to recognize the guy at the bar. It is, of course, Mika Häkkinen, who retired from F1 in 2001 and raced in the DTM series from 2005 through 2007. I’m not sure of his connection to RedBull (and I really expected to see Sebastian Vettel at the bar), but I suspect the message is this: the time for tossing back the bubbly is over, gents; let’s get to racing.
