Porsche Porn: The 911 GT2 RS, Flogged Like A Racehorse

Even if you’re not a Porsche fan, you need to give serious respect to the 911 GT2 RS. The relatively benign looking 911 variant is actually the most powerful road-going Porsche ever built, and packs 612 horsepower (620 PS) into a 3.6 liter, twin-turbo boxer motor. That’s enough to get the car from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, and Porsche claims a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of just 7:18. That makes the mid-engined, rear drive 911 GT2 RS some seven seconds quicker around the ‘Ring than an AWD Nissan GT-R.

As you can imagine, tail-out cornering is the order of the day, and you’d best have some serious seat time with mid-engined, rear drive cars before you get behind the wheel of a GT2 RS. There is a very, very fine line between “just enough” and “way too much” when it comes to driving a car like the GT2 RS at speed. A little too much brake, a little too much throttle, or a turn-in just a millisecond too quick, and you’re pirouetting across the pavement like a 3,020 pound figure skater.

The GT2 RS is a remarkable engineering achievement, and Porsche engineers managed to shave another 154 pounds from the already-lightened GT2. The RS version gets lots of expensive but lightweight carbon fiber bits, and comfort is sacrificed in the name of speed. Seat padding is minimal, and the GT2 RS lacks climate control and any kind of audio system. Even the lead acid battery was swapped out for a lithium ion battery, saving over 22 pounds.

The GT2 RS starts at $245,000, before you begin adding options. That’s a moot point, since you’ll be spending quite a bit more if you want one: production is already sold out.

    Umm, Kurt – the 911 is a rear-engined car.

My God that car is crazy.
