1980 Ford Escort Mk2

Remember yesterday when I was talking about old vs. new? Well, Jalopnik recently posted this video comparing an old 1980 Ford Escort Mk. II rally car against a new, and thoroughly modern Ford Fiesta rally car. The results themselves are not surprising as the old Escort is no match for the Fiesta. What is interesting though are the impressions from the father and son driving team of Gwyndaf and Elfyn Evans. So, if you could choose, which one would you rather have in your garage?

escort any day of the week any week of the year. racing is one of those instances where the world really has gone to hell in a handbasket you had the racing in general was more intresting to watch and the drivers atleast seemed to always peeter patter over the ragged edge. and this is really apparent in rallying ive seen a vid of walter röhrl doing the rally de turin in the 80’s and you could se his feet move like a tapdancer and he had to really work for his livving. same with f1 like in the 90’s with ayrton senna and that bunch.

I’d take an AWD rally car like Ken Block’s. That’d be the most fun. Not to put down the Escort, as it really is an amazing car, but I think the new Focus rally cars really are that great of vehicles.

Ironically, I have a Fiesta and two RWD Escorts in the garage! Not surprisingly, my two young kids always prefer to drive in the Escort if they’re given a choice…
