The accolades that the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT has received have been nothing short of stellar. Not only does it look fantastic, but power wise the thing is a hammer, in fact it recently made 395 rear wheel horsepower on the dyno! Ladies and gents, these are big numbers and I have no doubt that Ford is going to sell these babies by the thousands.
If the GT’s power isn’t enough for you then you can always bump up to the Shelby GT500 and give yourself and additional 138 hp compliments of that nice big supercharger that sits on top the 5.4-liter V8. The new Shelby also boasts a new two-row intercooler that shows a 40 percent increase in heat rejection capacity, for stable high-temperature power production. The drive train and suspension are also amped up by way of a 3.73 limited slip rear axle, special front and rear springs, rear shocks and unique staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels with Z-rated tires.
The Shelby GT500 is a hot rod, performance car, back roads blaster and track day shredder. It was made to do everything and do it well – the key now though is to wait and see how well it actually sells. I say this because if the standard Mustang GT is truly the great car that everyone says, then it may in fact hurt the sales of the GT500 in the long term. 2011 is going to be a very interesting year for all variants of the Ford Mustang.
