The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating claims that 2002 to 2007 BMW 7-Series models equipped with BMW’s “Comfort Access” system and electronic gear selector, which is supposed to put the vehicle into “Park” when the ignition is shut off, can potentially roll away on their own. The agency initiated the investigation after receiving a report of a 2006 BMW 7 Series rolling away after the driver had exited the vehicle.

BMW has provided documentation to the NHTSA illustrating that the incident was not an isolated one. No cause of the potential transmission system failure has been identified, and BMW is fully cooperating with the NHTSA in the investigation.

Here’s just one more example of “too much technology.” How hard is it, really, to put a car into “Park” and apply an emergency brake? Is the two seconds saved by an automated system really worth the risk of potential system failure? We’re going with “no” on that one.
