Do you like hidden agendas, back room deals and the need to feel hated? If so then maybe you should become… A POLITICIAN! This is State Assemblyman Michael DenDekker, a Democrat from Queens, NY who has introduced legislation that would make it mandatory for every bicycle – that’s right I said bicycle – to have a valid registration and inspection just like an automobile or motorcycle. Now normally we here at Ridelust.com don’t get into politics, but this guy is out of his flippin’ mind if he thinks that New Yorkers are going to stand for this. The new legislation would require each bicycle in New York State to pay a $25 registration fee for a “private” bicycle or $50 for a “commercial” bike with a $5 fee every year thereafter – talk about total crap. Bicycling in New York is a way of life for millions of residents, as we do it to save money, get through traffic quicker and stay in shape.
DenDekker is justifying his legislation by saying that he sees cyclists as a danger to pedestrians because they don’t obey the traffic rules. He also stated in an interview with the Gothamist that he never once consulted any cyclists and or cyclists groups. We all know that this has absolutely nothing to do with public safety as police have every right to issue violations now for cyclists who don’t obey the traffic laws. In the end it’s just another way for the state to line its pockets with public money.
