The gossip mill is alive this morning with hoary rumors that Saturn’s new incarnation will be supplied with vehicles from Renault Samsung Motors, to replace the GM vehicles which will cease production at the end of the year. Renault has already been thrown about as a possible supplier, but word on the street is that the cost of federalizing European Renaults would be cost prohibitive.

RSM SM3 - based on the old Sentra.

That’s where RSM steps in – lower fixed costs than in Europe might make them an attractive supplier. RSM’s current lineup is almost exclusively provided by Nissan, which is not an issue because Renault owns a majority share of Nissan. They don’t have a current likely candidate for transplant, though, and it seems unlikely that American buyers would stomach a rebadged Nissan Maxima as a Saturn. So in the end, it’s just a rumor. But an interesting one.
