Now this should be exciting. Rowan Atkinson, the comedian who plays one of our favorite bumbling Brits Mr. Bean, is said to be teaming up with Aston Martin chairman, David Richards for the upcoming Aston Martin British GT4 Challenge at the Silverstone Raceway in the UK. Atkinson and Richards will be piloting an Aston Martin Vantage GT4, in what I am sure will be an exciting event. Most of us obviously know Rowan Atkinson as the lovable and goofy Mr. Bean, but what you don’t realize is that he is also a die-hard car nut. In fact Atkinson currently owns a McLaren F1 and a Jaguar Mk IV – apparently comedy pays.
Racing is nothing new for both Richards and Atkinson. In fact back in 1981 Richards won the World Rally Championship as a co-driver and since then has been itching to get back behind the wheel. In a statement Richards said:
“I raced an old DB3S at Goodwood and while I really enjoyed it, my wife wasn’t too happy as the car had little in the way of modern safety features,” said Richards in a release. “When we launched the new GT4 Challenge series this year, I thought it would be a great opportunity to go racing in something much safer.”
“After testing the new car and finding out how much fun it is to drive, all I needed was a partner, as there was no way I was going to survive two hours behind the wheel on my own,” Richards added. “I was speaking to Rowan recently, who has raced Astons in the past, and he was up for the challenge, so we thought we would give it a go together.”
A test session for both Atkinson and Richards is set for May 21st at Silverstone.
