2011 is finally here and with that comes an entirely new crop of car movies. There’s something for everyone, from muscle cars to classics, exotics, and Autobots too. I’m talking about major car porn and I was excited to write this because I got a chance to research, stare and fantasize about getting behind the wheel of some of these featured machines. If only I could get a night shift or two at the Peterson Automobile Museum, I’d blow out of there like a bat out of hell in everything from the Batmobile to Steve McQueen’s Jaguar XKSS and anything else from the movie cars exhibit.
Opening this Friday is the Nicholas Cage revenge thriller Drive Angry. It comes complete with a cast of muscle cars, hot chicks and villains that will hopefully keep you occupied regardless of how bad the acting might be. Cage plays Milton, a father who rises from hell to avenge his daughters death and save his granddaughter from an evil cult. Along the way he picks up a hot girl and arrives in style by way of a matte black 1969 Dodge Charger. Other notable cars in this film are a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS and a 1964 Buick Riviera.
The Fast and the Furious franchise is back this spring to cash in at the box office by reuniting Brian O’Conner and Dominic Toretto. The last installment, Fast & Furious, left us hanging when Mia and Brian broke Dom out of custody as the credits rolled. In the new film we’ve come to learn that the crew is back and cornered by federal agents in Rio de Janeiro as they try to pull one last job. New comers to the scene are Dwayne Johnson as federal agent Luke Hobbs, and Elsa Pataky as Elena Neves.
Lightning McQueen and his cast of cars are back for another round of racing. This time Mater and McQueen are set to compete in the first ever World Grand Prix, a race to determine the worlds fastest car. Mater gets caught up in an adventure of his own which is sure to thicken the plot. One thing for sure is this movie will bring on the laughs! Keep an eye out for new cars including an Aston Martin that goes by the name of Nigel Gearsly.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, DRIVE stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman and Christina Henricks. Gosling plays a Hollywood stunt man by day and a criminal by night. As a driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld he takes a job from his hot next door neighbors father and predictably the job goes very wrong. Now his neighbor, her son and his life are in jeopardy. To save their lives he must do what he does best; DRIVE! (How cliche, I know)
Michael Bay returns once again to direct the third installment of the Transformers series, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. This time the Autobots and Decepticons learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the moon. This results in a knock-down drag out battle for the survival of their race. Even if the plot ends up being terrible there’s rumored to be a new Ferrari 458 Autobot driving around. There will be plenty of explosions and lots of carnage as well. Also, for those of you that don’t already know, Megan Fox is out and a new girl, Victoria’s Secret model, Rosie Huntington Whiteley is in.
The Green Hornet was released earlier this month, which means that the Black Beauty is back complete with guns and missiles coming out of every door. Now that’s what I call defensive driving!
A documentary on F1 World champion, Aryton Senna, who won the F1 Championship three times before his tragic death at age 34 was released earlier last month at Sundance Film Festival.
