The Mastretta MXT prototype from 2007.

The Mastretta MXT has been a work in progress since the sports coupe concept was first shown back in 2007. This year’s Paris Auto Show will see the debut of the production Mastretta MXT, billed as a competitor to the Lotus Elise. The company plans production of some 150 cars per year, 70% of which will be exported to the US or the UK.

The production MXT will use a bonded aluminum chassis and a composite body to minimize weight. Power comes from a turbocharged Ford Duratec motor, good for an estimated 238 horsepower. The car will feature a mid-engine, rear drive layout for optimized handling.

Mastretta has a website, but it’s inactive until the Paris debut on September 30. We’ll give you an update on specs, availability and pricing as soon as we know more.

The Mastretta MXT, will have a VW 2.0T engine (same as the GTI), my source is Daniel Mastretta

  3. Kurt says:

Bob, why the switch from Ford? Will the VW motor run more boost to produce better than 200 HP?

Please give Mastretta my best wishes. I’d love to see another sports car option in the US marketplace.

I´m sorry Kurt, I just called Mastretta, he confirmed your info, seems like they changed from VW to Ford. They actually say it was a leak! so you published it first! :D

James, it does. It’s a beautiful design, and the pic I posted really doesn’t do it justice. I just hope it isn’t priced like an Audi R8.
