Mark Webber Explains KERS, Adjustable Wing

If you’re confused as to what Formula 1’s KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is, or how the new adjustable rear wing will come into play during a race, don’t be. Red Bull Renault’s Mark Webber is here to talk you though the latest innovation in Formula 1, in a language all of us can understand. OK, maybe not all of us, since Webber’s Aussie accent is rather strong, but most of us; at least there isn’t a lot of science or math in the video below, which does a surprisingly good job of explaining things.

Whether or not KERS will have an impact on the 2011 season remains to be seen. It certainly had no impact in 2009, when most team who tried the technology abandoned it as ineffective. Even Webber points out that the system really doesn’t provide enough of an advantage to make up for a slow race car, but it could potentially add a new strategic component to F1 racing. The adjustable rear wing should have the same effect, and I’m wondering who the first driver to wall a car due to temporary lack of downforce will be. My money’s on Sebastian Vettel, although it could just as easily be Lewis Hamilton. We’ll get to find out one week from today.

    I can’t figure out why they went back to the KERS systems when they were, for the most part, considered failures. Not only did they not produce overtaking, I seem to remember several battery failures (particularly with Ferrari). KERS was good for two things: 1) standing starts, and 2) blocking. Neither of which particularly aided in the show. It’ll be interesting to watch for sure.

      ds440, near as I can tell it’s Bernie’s way of making F1 look “green”. I seriously doubt it will have any impact whatsoever on teh 2011 F1 season, but it WILL help to push battery development. That’s not a bad thing.
