It was a remarkably consistent run for the 9-5, and therein is at least one of the reasons Saab has struggled as of late. In the 12 years that the sedan has been around, (an eternity in car years) the car slipped from the public’s radar and has not been a serious contender for some time. But take heart Saab-lovers, the the 9-5’s replacement is on the way and while the sedan is ending, the Sport Combi will hang around one more year.
The Saab 9-5 received a couple of updates in 2002 and 2006, but has been basically the same design since 1997. Although it was competitive when first launched, the Saab slowly fell behind comparable sports sedans as the years passed, something a couple of facelifts was unable to rectify.
An important step in Saab returning to profitability will not only be an updated 9-5, but the soon-to-be launched 9-3X crossover, which sports significant tech features.
