Ken Block Prepares For His First WRC Tarmac Rally

Posted in FIA WRC, Ford, Racing, Rally by Kurt Ernst | August 20th, 2010 | 6 Responses |

As you watch this clip, Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino are in the midst of competing in their first ever tarmac WRC event, the 2010 ADAC Rally Deutschland. Block is confident about a podium finish, just not at this event. He’s also confident about a stage win, “eventually”. For a guy whose only expectation is to finish the event, he seems plenty comfortable with on-pavement car control, and his self-deprecating sense of humor is part of the reason we love him. That, and his ungodly ability to drive a car.

I wouldn’t count Block and Gelsomino out of contention just yet. They’ve only raced two tarmac events, both in Rally America, but the pair managed a win both times. WRC is more challenging than Rally America, but Block has the ability to adapt and excel like few other drivers. Even if he doesn’t do well this weekend, you can rest assured that he’ll apply what he’s learned to the next WRC tarmac rally.

that fine balance of insanity and skill… this guy has got it. What are the speeds these rally cars get up to on asphalt? 100? 130?

  2. Kurt says:

Dave, when you’re sliding all four wheels and madly dialing in opposite lock, 80 mph feels a lot faster than 130 mph…

  3. DaveMofo says:

I bet! And the steering wheels are probably 180 degrees lock to lock, so they’re REALLY sensitive. Add rigid suspension, tiny roads, and surfaces that change constantly even WITH pavement and you get this sort of awesome sauce. And the spectators… WTF?? They always end up getting hit!

i wonder how two legends, one from rallying and one from F1, would compete in each other’s fields
would be an interesting match to see Schumacher vs Ken Block on the tarmac rally!

haha the spectator part is soo true !

  5. DaveMofo says:

that would be WAY cool. Maybe throw Valentino Rossi in the mix?

    Dave… you know it !
