K-1 Attack Hybrid Supercar, By West Philly Hybrid X Team


Based out of West Philadelphia high school, the West Philly Hybrid X Team is making headlines for their impressive engineering ability in the creation of the K-1 Attack hybrid supercar. Designed and produced entirely within the walls of West Philadelphia High School’s Automotive Academy, the student-built K-1 Attack is an impressive demonstration in alternatively-fueled performance.

Equally impressive is the group itself, founded in 1998 by physics and math teacher, Simon Hauger, and responsible for giving inner-city students a valuable opportunity they otherwise might not have been afforded. In addition to offering a chance for West Philly students to demonstrate a mental acumen far beyond their years, the Philly Hybrid X Team also provides a unique preparatory course for a career in the automotive industry. Charged (no pun intended) with designing and executing an 100-mpg automobile, the Philly Hybrid X Team is vying for the prestigious Progressive Automotive X Prize and, despite the odds, are considered a Top 10 contender.

    In the science lab was where I spent most of my days

    Writin’ lab reports inside of the school
    When Progressive Insurance
    Who was up to some good
    Set us up an X-Prize in my neighborhood
    I got one little idea and my prof went so far
    To say “You’re buildin’ with your classmates a hybrid supercar”

    I whistled to the car and when it came near
    The license plate said 100 miles per gallon was here
    If anything I can say this car is rare
    But I thought “Nah, forget it, your Prius can’t compare!”

    I pulled up to the contest about 7 or 8
    And I yelled to the judges “Yo homes, this defines ‘great'”
    I looked at my kingdom
    I was finally back
    To sit at the wheel of the K-1 Attack.

    Dear Sirs!
    I bring to your attention.
    The hybrid Advanced Gas-turbine Engine of a variable cycle for Supercar.
    Power of engine 800 HP, 1200 HP – short time.
    Torque on the start 1431 Nm.
    Weight of engine 110 kg .
    Size of engine: width 390 mm , height 390 mm , length 800 mm .
    Air inlet – 4 pipes in diameter 98mm, the gas outlet – 4 pipes in diameter 106mm.
    The car has no a box of speeds and coupling.
    Weight of supercar –1000 kg.
    Transmission – electric, 125hp, 42000 RPM. Other power – direct transfer from the turbine.
    Acceleration of the supercar up to 100km/h – 3sec, up to 400km/h –23sec.
    Gas turbine engine for car – it is use of all kinds of the fuels, low emission of harmful substances, low consumption of the oil, the easy starting at negative temperatures, the less weight and sizes and etc.
    At the offered engine the new scheme and simple the variable gas-dynamic cycle, which gives in addition the unique properties and capabilities for the engine and for the car.
    In comparison with the usual gas-turbine engine the offered engine has in 2 times smaller nominal power and in 5 times smaller power of a transmission, the large air tapping behind the compressor and power take-off from a compressor turbine rotor without increase of the gases temperature and without decrease of the engine power.
    I suggest to create the preliminary project of the Supercar with the Advanced Gas Turbine Engine.
