Formula One drivers have reputations for being hedonistic and self-centered, so it’s a bit touching to see the reverence that Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton have for the cars (and their former drivers) in McLaren’s storage garage. Just like kids who get their picture snapped in a race car at a store grand opening, Button and Hamilton take pictures of each other behind the wheel of Ayrton Senna’s McLaren MP4-4, which won 15 of 16 races in 1988.
The drivers point out the differences between the F1 cars of today and the cars driven by legends such as Senna, Prost and Mansell. Button admits that he’d be reluctant to pilot the MP4-4, given it’s punishing suspension, narrow wheelbase and wide stance. Even Hamilton admits that he’d take his time lapping in the car.
In any case, this is a cool video, first posted on Wheels, and well worth three minutes of your life. It’s nice to see a different side of these guys for a change.
