2012 Nissan Rogue SV FWD: RideLust Review
I’m all for entertaining car ads, but this South African ad for the Lexus IS-F, found on AutoSpies, leaves me baffled. I get the whole time / space thing, and I understand the basic concept of time slowing down as you approach the speed of light. I’m not sure I buy into the Lexus IS-F being fast enough to accomplish this, even if it’s only by 1/1000 of a second.
Of course this does bring up other concerns for me as well, like what happens if I tear a sheet of paper and inadvertently split an atom? Car commercials should never make you think this much, instead, they should focus on what they do best, which is using sex to sell cars. What this ad clearly needs is more cleavage and less science.
As a physics teacher who has set this website as his homepage, I’d like to see a little more enthusiasm for science. Especially since cars are a product of mechanical engineering which is defined as, “the application of physics” (where physics is the crux of every other type of science). I’m sorry to say, but science and optimization is what makes cars go fast in the hands of a great driver.
jw, you shamed me into it – I promise to write a piece on the “physics of driving” in the near future.
