If you live in any type of urban area that employs bicycle delivery people, than you’ve no doubt noticed the recent trend towards hybrid bicycles. Part human powered and part electric, these new rides assist delivery folk in their travels as they try and bring us the latest and greatest in fast food. These bikes generally start at about $900.00 and go up from there, and provide the rider with anywhere from 15-35 miles of uninterrupted ride time from their little electric motors. In the quest to build a better mousetrap, a company called Fortune Hanebrink has now introduced a new hybrid-electric bicycle aimed more at the adventure rider than the delivery person. According to their website:
The HANEBRINK Electric All-Terrain Vehicle is the evolution of the original, revolutionary HANEBRINK design, combining state-of-the art green technology with an on-demand hybrid electric system and the latest in bicycle technology. Crank the throttle and the 600 watt motor powers the HANEBRINK to speeds up to 20 mph. If you want to go faster, just start pedaling.
While it sounds like a good idea at first and is no doubt a cool ride, keep in mind that these things start at a whopping $5500 – that’s some big coin ladies and gentlemen. My thought is that if you want to exercise, just buy a standard human powered bicycle. If your needs require anything more, then guess what, you need a scooter or motorcycle. Hell, for $5500 I’d go out and purchase them both and be done with it.
