Group B Rally Cars

They had 600 hp, four-wheel drive and looked as though they came from the future. They also defied the laws of physics by enabling their drivers to do things in them the likes of which have never been rivaled. These are the Group B Rally Cars from the mid-1980’s and they were without a doubt the craziest four-wheeled machines in all of motor sport. In the early 1980’s rallying was just starting to come into its own with big corporate sponsorships and increased fan counts. The beauty of the Group B cars was that the designers, mechanics and engineers basically had carte blanche from a development standpoint as new homologation rules only required manufacturers to build a total of 200 cars in order for them to compete. Combine that with little to no restrictions on power output and you’ve got machines that the drivers of the day could hardly control. The Group B cars lasted only two years as rally organizers finally realized that for safety reasons, restrictions needed to be put in place. There is no doubt though that these amazing rally cars will go down in history as some of the most outlandish (and dangerous) machines ever made.

Classic vid and a great tribute to the greatest era in rallying the likes of which we will unfortunatly never see again. Though I understand the reasons why group B was disbanded, I regret that it has started a trend where engine size keeps being reduced. Slight comment btw, I believe that group B ran for 4 years between 82 and 86. Anyways great post!
