Gran Turismo 5 Released Today! Your First Impressions?

Gran Turismo 5 Cover

This Thanksgiving, family argument time will be forced to compete with Gran Turismo 5 – which is finally (and actually) being released TODAY.  To get a sense of how big a deal this truly is, check out the clip below.  IGN has provided a video solely featuring the opening of the collector’s edition game box.  You may feel dirty after watching this.

Before I lead you astray, this is not a review, though one is forthcoming.  While mayhem erupts at your local game store, yours truly will be rocking back and forth and hyperventilating until later this evening when I will finally be able to pick up GT5 for myself, before immediately setting off on a lengthy multi-state drive, several hours of which will invariably be spent in traffic expressing my frustration at the world à la Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes.

Gran Turismo 5

Since I am forced to while away the bulk of today and most of Thursday unjustly separated from that pure and unblemished disc and its promise of bringing sunshine to the monsoon that is my life, I have to live vicariously through you, dear RideLust readers.  I’d like to know your initial impressions of the game.

Gran Turismo 5

Is it worth the five years of development?  The $60 million budget?  Is the actual game play as insanely gorgeous as the multitude of screenshots and video clips suggest?  Just how good are the new features – the weather effects, the mechanical and body damage and the course editor (among others)?  What do you think of the NASCAR and WRC additions? The car list and the new tracks?  The online racing?  The soundtrack? How accurate is the driving experience – the feel, the sounds, the physics?  How does it stack up against Forza 3 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (clearly a different type of game but many are going to buy one car game over the other right now)? And most significantly, is it fun?  I want to hear your opinions of Gran Turismo 5.  Let me know what you think.

And to whet your appetite, a few videos.

I got it today, so I’ll give you a heads up: it’ll take about 15 minutes to load and install the required update, then another 45 minutes or so to load all the tracks on the PS3 hard drive. There’s a whole lot of down time when the game autosaves something, so you really need to embrace the Japanese mindset of patience. I haven’t done much racing yet, but the graphics are every bit as good as we expected, and the physics seem to be much better than GT5 Prologue.

Sucks! They must have run out. It was supposed to be available at the same time across the globe.

Btw I was able to get started on GT5. There’s a download you need to do immediately that doesn’t take too long, and then, in addition, the game takes a while to install if you choose the recommended option (8 gigs). I can’t spend much time on this b/c I gotta head out, but so far I was able to get through the Sunday Cup and I’m hooked. It’s absolutely gorgeous and the game play is terrific.

Kurt just beat me to it. :)

And yeah, agreed, there is quite a bit of down time. That’s my only complaint.

    ima order it off line…
