In most countries here, Diesel fuel is about 70% to 80% of the price of gas but you pay about double the annual road tax for your car, so driving a Diesel car is only economical if you drive at least a certain amount of miles per year and keep the car for a minimum of X years depending on initial price and depreciation. And yet still most EU countries have anywhere from 30% to 50% Diesel vehicles and that percentage is increasing. On another note: almost all EU countries also have LPG at the pumps. In the Netherlands after-market mixed gasoline/LPG-enabled cars make up almost a THIRD of all vehicles on the road.
