Ford is recalling some 291,000 model year 2009 and 2010 F-150 pickups to correct a potential issue with door latch springs. Ford has found that normal customer usage could cause the door handle spring to break; if this occurs, there would be insufficient spring tension to return the handle to the fully closed position. In the event of a side impact crash, this would increase the likelihood of an unintended door opening. Ford was quick to point out that the doors would not open unintentionally under normal driving conditions, and that the recall was to address concerns of a side-impact crash only.
All F-150 models affected by the recall have chrome door handles, so it should be easy enough for you to tell if you’ll be getting a letter from Ford in the coming months. Dealers will inspect the door latch mechanism and replace the affected components as required. If you notice a change in door latch mechanism tension, my advice would be to schedule a service appointment at your earliest opportunity. If you have questions or concerns about this recall, Ford’s customer service can be reached at (800) 392-3673.
