I’ll start off by saying that’s the good news. The better news? We’re getting it stateside, although I can’t tell you exactly when other than “early 2012”. You may recall that the current Focus ST, which made 225 horsepower, was killed off in the EU by the stricter Euro 5 emission standards. Ford promised a new model that would make us forget all about the old one, and it looks like they’ve hit the mark.
The new Focus ST is the first vehicle developed under Ford’s global Performance Vehicles strategy, and it’s the first global sports car sold by Ford since the Ford / Mercury Capri of the early 1970s. The Focus ST will use a turbocharged 2.0 liter EcoBoost motor that puts out 247 horsepower. Per the Ford press release, it will be “completely true to Ford’s ST heritage”, which includes a trifecta of handling, performance and sound.
I almost bought a Focus SVT back when they were launched, and I still kick myself for passing it by. With a newer, better Focus ST on the horizon, I can finally stop trolling eBay looking for a killer deal on a Focus SVT.
