Puma’s company’s CEO, Jochen Zeitz made the announcement two days after Bolt’s 22nd birthday and a day after he ran the third leg of the 4x100m to help Jamaica win the gold medal and post a new world record of 37.10 seconds.  Zeitz said Bolt will get the car as a birthday gift from Puma which sponsors both Bolt and the Jamaica Olympic team.  The relay win was Bolt’s third gold of the 29th Olympiad, having earlier taken the 100m in a world record 9.69secs and the 200m, also in a world record 19.30secs.

The 2008 M3 has a 4.0-liter V-8, that is a relative of the M5’s 5.0-liter V-10, but is 33 pounds lighter than the smaller straight six of the old M3. The M3 delivers a whopping 414 horsepower which combined with lots of lighweight components, including a carbon-fiber roof means it is incredibly quick.  Like the M5, the new M3 offers drivers the ability to “tune” their cars. Buttons on the console allow two different throttle sensitivity settings, three different shock rates, and the opportunity to switch off the stability control.  With the Mdrive menu the driver is given even more choices including an additional throttle sensitivity setting, the option of sport or normal modes for the Servotronic steering and a race-face setting for the stability control system that allows power oversteer, but still intervenes if it senses things are getting out of hand.  Select the settings you want, and they can be accessed with a single press of the “M” button on the steering wheel. The new BMW M3 goes is sold here in the U.S. with a price tag in the low $60,000 range.

Bolt, who was criticized by many for showboating after he won the 100m race, said: “I talked to the other athletes. Most of them were okay with it. That’s just how it goes in track and field. I’m just trying to enjoy myself, that’s it. The fans are watching, and they want to know your personality, and I try to enjoy myself at all times. I won’t change, and a lot of people like seeing me perform. I won’t change because that’s my personality.”  No word on whether any of Bolt’s teammates in the relay will be receiving a car….or at the very least a ride from Bolt in his new car.
