HEMI – a name that is synonymous with speed, torque and sheer horsepower. No other engine in history has the same name recognition as the big dog from Chrysler. The engine itself has been around for more than 50 years and gets better and better with each new generation. Now Chrysler has released yet another version with their new 426 all-aluminum Gen III Crate HEMI. The engine was unveiled at the PRI Show (Performance Racing Industry) last week down in Orlando, Florida. The HEMI is said to put out 540 horsepower and a stump pulling 530 ft.-lbs. of torque and comes complete with intake manifold and oil pan. The price… a stout $13,675. As a Mopar enthusiast I can tell you that the 426 HEMI is the engine to have and one that is also instantly recognizable from all onlookers.

It also makes no difference if the new HEMI is found under the hood of your classic Mopar or your current generation Chrysler product, as just having a HEMI under the hood will tell the world you’ve got something special.

It kinda makes me wonder how much was changed from the Magnum to the Hemi when Mopar changed the name of their big engine lineup.

Hemi, as in hemispherical head, is not the exclusive domain of Mopar. Yet Hemi is said with special reverence when used in conjuction with a Mopar product.

So, what is it that makes a “Hemi” a Hemi? I understand that the design aspect of a hemi head can and will effect performance but I hope that Mopar has done something so as to make their motors more than a variation of a push rod motor and not relying on the legend of the original Hemi to push sales.
