October 8th was one of those rare days when everything just seemed to come together. You see I had been invited up to Monitcello Motor Club to witness the first ever “Drift of the Super Cars”, an event that promises to become one of the premier events in the sport. First off let me just say that Monticello is probably one of, if not the top track facility on the East Coast. Its 4.1 mile course was created to provide members and drivers with a track experience like no other, and I have to say that after having been to countless other tracks in the United States, that it delivers in spades. Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, Porsche’s and even a Mercedes-Benz CLK Black Series were all on hand to participate in the event along side some of the most insane drift cars that you’re ever likely to see.
Lap after lap drivers would slide these cars around to the point that I now have a whole new respect for the sport of drifting. These guys were not just doing donuts in a parking lot mind you, but slinging around $100,000 automobiles in a fashion that would make the Dukes of Hazzard head back to driving school. I attended the event from 8am-5pm and throughout the entire day I have to say that I was just as impressed with the professionalism of the organizers and track personnel as I was with the event itself. Like I said, there are some days that just come together and the first annual “Drift of the Super Cars” at Monticello Motor Club was a prime example.
Hat tip to Roger Garbow – job well done!!
