The Prez is laying down the law, protectionist tariff style, by slapping light truck and automobile tires from China with a 35% tariff in an attempt to bolster support among the United Steelworkers union for the proposed healthcare reform bill. But there’s more than simply a cynical political rationale here – American tire companies simply can’t compete with the flood of cheap tires from China, which have captured 16.7% of the US market (up from around 4% in 2004). The International Trade Commission agrees with the President’s determination that the Chinese tires have disrupted the US tire market, and supports the tariff, but it’s likely that China won’t be quite so enthusiastic to see a tariff on their products rise from 4% to a total of 39%. Better grab some no-name rubber for your hooptie quick, as the tariff goes into effect on September 26th.
