Continuing their tradition of doling out yearly achievement awards to the automotive industry, the respected auto afficinados of Top Gear have crowned the Caterham Superlight R500 Top Gear’s “Car of the Year” for 2008. Although any lightning-fast vehicle seems to earn instant favor with the judges, the Caterham Super Seven – or the “Seven” – stole Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May’s heart with both its incredibly performance on the track and its relative inexpensiveness. Under the expert tutelage of the famously mysterious Stig, the £37,000 ($56,518 USD) Super Seven fell just a fraction of a second shy of breaking Top Gear’s record for fastest time around their Dunsfold track, but did manage to steal the number 5 spot, effectively unseating the £1 million Bugatti Veyron.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson (whose wife owns a Super Seven) gushed over the Super Seven, praising it for “achieving something that a car of its value shouldn’t be able to.”
