Richard Petty
*Yeah… that’s a convertible.

If you’ve ever driven a car built before 1970 then you know damn well that they’re about as safe as an ox cart. There are no crumple zones, no airbags and the brakes were from the Flintstone era. Back in the late 1950′s safety was more of an afterthought as drivers simply had one thing on their minds, winning. It was a time of learning and experimenting in NASCAR and because of this safety for both the drivers and the crowd was more of an afterthought than anything else. The following is video of the 1959 Daytona 500. The cars were huge, the technology was nonexistent and the sheer will of the drivers was something that continues to amaze us to this day.

Ouninpohja Rally WRC

The cars that compete in the WRC are equipped to take on some of the toughest terrain imaginable at speeds of well over 100 mph. Their durability is as legendary as the drivers who pilot them, and pilot them they do. For instance the Ouninpohja stage that takes place during Rally Finland is thought to be not only the toughest stage in WRC, but also the most dangerous. It’s said that the stage is one that can never be mastered and that it’s simply too fast, however that hasn’t stopped some of the world’s best drivers from trying to tackle it head on.

Ben Hess #55

There’s something heartwarming about a father sharing his hobbies with his son. Whether it be teaching him the nuances of how to tweak a carburetor, or landing that perfect double on a CR500, it’s just good to see family interests getting passed down through the generations. The following film by Daniel Michaelis shows us just how this is done by following the father and son team of Collin and Ben Hess as they rip up the track and get dirty on two wheels.

The Power of Top Fuel Dragsters

Posted in General, Racing, Videos by MrAngry | February 17th, 2012 | Leave a Reply |

Last year I was invited to attend the Top Fuel Winter Nationals in English Town, New Jersey. It was my first foray into the world of top fuel dragsters and to say that I was blown away would be an understatement. You see when I think of a performance car, I think of something with between 300-500 hp that runs north of 170 mph. However after viewing these cars in person, all I can say is that my opinions of performance have changed. These top fuel cars run in excess of 8,000 hp and are capable of tripping the quarter mile at over 300 mph. They’re long, sleek and so powerful that they literally shake the earth around them and while they’re definitely not street legal, they are simply astonishing in terms of the engineering that goes into them. Don’t believe me? Click through and see for yourself.

Group B Insanity: Audi Sport Quattro Porn

Group B Rally

Buck-ass crazy… that’s the only way I would categorize any driver who ran a car in the Group B rally class in WRC from 1984 to 1986. They ran upwards of 700 hp, had little to no traction management systems and even though they were fully-caged cars, they were a far cry from having the safety systems that today’s rally cars utilize. Perhaps the most famous and recognizable of the Group B beasties was Audi’s Sport Quattro. Back then it was a hotbed of technology and also changed the way people looked upon the sport. Don’t believe me? Click through for the video and prepare to get motor-wood.

2012 Corvette Z06 VS Nissan GT-R

The mighty 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition vs Godzilla, the 2013 Nissan GT-R Premium. Both of these cars are titans of speed. One is a technological powerhouse, the other a tried and true American sledgehammer. Neither of these cars is for the faint of heart and both will get you into serious trouble if you’re not careful. The big question though is… which is faster? Inside Line recently pitted these two road rockets against each other to find the answer to that exact question.

Flower of Scotland – How Fast Can You Go?

Posted in Educational, General, Racing, Videos by MrAngry | February 6th, 2012 | 1 Response |

Flower Of Scotland

It’s built in Scotland by a team of French and Scottish engineers. It’s raced at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Nevada, and the guy responsible for its turbo system is from Texas. The Flower of Scotland is a true multinational project whose sole intention was to be the first car with a 1.0-liter engine to break the 300 mph barrier. Power comes from a Kawasaki ZX11 motorcycle engine with one big-ass Garrett turbo on it that can max out at about 35 lbs of boost generating around 400 hp. Not bad for a 1-liter mill. The streamliner runs aluminum front wheels and is only 21-inches wide meaning that this sucker must be a handful to drive. That didn’t stop this international team though from trying to break the record. Click through for the video to see how they did.
