It’s unfortunate, but the majority of us live out our automotive lives through other people who are a lot cooler than we are. Case in point, the driver of this wickedly bad-ass Porsche 997 GT3 RS. This is a vehicle that those of us with little means dream about when we’re staring at the ceiling at night. We all know about shows like Top Gear, Fifth Gear and hell, even Fast N Loud. But there’s another automotive program that actually trumps every single one of them. It’s called Best Motoring and it’s featured only in Japan. The show pits super-cars against each other in no-holds-barred track battles that are truly epic. What you are about to see has been out for awhile, however once you hit the play button I think you’ll forget about that. I’ve seen a lot of crazy things happen while on the road course, however what you’re about to witness trumps most of them. You see most drivers are at least aware of what type of transmission is in their car before they drive it at high speed. This guy though… this guys got no clue.

Porsche is getting ready for its return to Le Mans in 2014. And it wants to remind you all that in 1971 it thoroughly and properly kicked ass. The monstrous 240-mile-an-hour 917 took first and second places, setting multiple records along the way. Oh, and 10 of the 13 cars that finished that year were Porsches.

In 1971 Porsche built the first magnesium-framed 917. The delicate birdcage of highly flammable and ultra-lightweight metal weighed just 42 kilograms, or 92 pounds. The frame was swathed in gossamer sheets of flowing fiberglass and perspex and given menacing tail fins. Then Porsche gingerly installed their latest creation: A magnesium and titanium air-cooled flat 12 good for more than 600 horsepower. The results were positively manic. Click through to see a highlight reel from the season, featuring the tarmac-swallowing, fire-breathing, time-warping 917.

The 917/30 variant could hit 62 mph in just 2.3 seconds and 124 in 5.3. It had a top speed of more than 240 mph. The comparable Ferrari of the day, the 512, had trouble breaking 200 mph.

In testing, driver Jackie Oliver did an average 155 mph per lap, the highest average speed ever recorded. The Martini Racing team went on to win Le Mans that year. Drivers Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep went 3,315 miles, a distance record, at an average speed of 155 mph, a speed record. The record remained untouched for decades.

A Porsche 917 in Gulf livery also took second place. Porsche 911s and even 907s took the majority of the other positions in the race. Only two Ferraris finished.

Attending track events can be one of the most exhilarating and exciting things you can do with your car. From novice drivers to experts, nothing says “fun” like wringing out your ride at speed. With speed however comes the chance for danger and in a race track environment there is usually “zero” warning when things are about to go south. The following video was recently shot at Northern California’s Thunderhill Raceway and shows just how unpredictable things can get even when there are experienced drivers behind the wheel.

Focusing on the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 F1 season, RUSH has high hopes of giving U.S. fans a shot of adrenaline by showing them just how exciting open wheel racing can be. Traction, power and balls. That’s what it takes to be a good drag racer these days. Have too much of one and not enough of the other though, and things can sometimes go south. If however you’ve got too much of all of the above, well then that can also be a detriment. Racer Jere Etheridge recently found this out when piloting what looks to be a late model Mustang down the 1,320. Not only did he have traction and power, but he also had the balls to stay in it the entire run making for one of the most exciting passes I’ve ever seen. Don’t believe me? They can be had with a host of different engines, weigh in at under 2,000 lbs. and have the ability to put the hurt on cars costing 5 times as much. This is a Caterham R300 that’s owned and driven by one Vincent Beltoise during the Grand Challenge 2011 in Alès, France. A mixture of gravel and tarmac, the course is one that tests all aspects of a drivers skill and prowess behind the wheel. Beltoise however not only makes it look easy, but ends up finishing 1st decimating the entire field.

Watching the unfortunate crashes that recently took place at the 2013 Bathurst 12h was somewhat bittersweet. This series is reminder of what used to take place during the heyday of Trans Am racing here in the United States. Sadly, I supposed all we can look forward too now are the Monterrey historics that take place on one Sunday in August during the week of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance at Mazda Laguna Seca raceway.
