Last year I was invited to attend the Top Fuel Winter Nationals in English Town, New Jersey. It was my first foray into the world of top fuel dragsters and to say that I was blown away would be an understatement. You see when I think of a performance car, I think of something with between 300-500 hp that runs north of 170 mph. However after viewing these cars in person, all I can say is that my opinions of performance have changed. These top fuel cars run in excess of 8,000 hp and are capable of tripping the quarter mile at over 300 mph. They’re long, sleek and so powerful that they literally shake the earth around them and while they’re definitely not street legal, they are simply astonishing in terms of the engineering that goes into them. Buck-ass crazy… that’s the only way I would categorize any driver who ran a car in the Group B rally class in WRC from 1984 to 1986. They ran upwards of 700 hp, had little to no traction management systems and even though they were fully-caged cars, they were a far cry from having the safety systems that today’s rally cars utilize. Perhaps the most famous and recognizable of the Group B beasties was Audi’s Sport Quattro. Back then it was a hotbed of technology and also changed the way people looked upon the sport. It’s built in Scotland by a team of French and Scottish engineers. It’s raced at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Nevada, and the guy responsible for its turbo system is from Texas. The Flower of Scotland is a true multinational project whose sole intention was to be the first car with a 1.0-liter engine to break the 300 mph barrier. Power comes from a Kawasaki ZX11 motorcycle engine with one big-ass Garrett turbo on it that can max out at about 35 lbs of boost generating around 400 hp. Not bad for a 1-liter mill. The streamliner runs aluminum front wheels and is only 21-inches wide meaning that this sucker must be a handful to drive. That didn’t stop this international team though from trying to break the record. Click through for the video to see how they did.

Red Bull is one of the rallies main sponsors and like everything they’re associated with, they pull out all the stops and go ballz-to-the-wall. The following video was produced by Red Bull and shows some highlights from this years 2012 event. The visuals are stunning, the machines are amazing and the race itself is well, one of the most grueling events in all of motor sports.

I think Dire Straits put it best when they said, “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes your the bug”. It happens to all of us at some point in time. We set out with the best of intentions but then somewhere along the way Murphy’s law kicks in and fucks it up for everybody. That’s exactly what happened to this drifter while he was entertaining a few track side spectators. When a entering a corner the driver caught a front wheel, thus sending him up and over onto his roof. Thankfully though there was a pillar of the community there with a camera phone that captured all the action. Good times for all those watching, bad times for the driver. But as they say, shit happens…

A few years ago I got my first taste of the 24 Hours of Lemons when I raced a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair up in Staford Springs, CT. The car was arguably the worst thing I’ve ever driven, but in the end it had an engine that just wouldn’t quit. The following year we ran a 1979 Buick Regal with a 301 cubic-inch small block, however while the car was great, the engine simply wasn’t long for this world. If you’ve ever been a competitor in Lemons then you know that your fate, at some point, will wind up in the hands of the judges. These icons of the judicial system have the right to levy penalties for just about anything they wish, which means at days end, they can either make or break your team. Smoking Tire host Matt Farah recently had the chance to be a guest judge at Lemons where he had the opportunity to impart his vast array of knowledge and wisdom on the poor unsuspecting competitors.

Whether it’s mountain biking, hiking, fishing, carpentry or knitting, everyone has a hobby that keeps them grounded and on the straight and narrow. For me it’s running flat-out on a nice flowing road course in some type of automobile. It’s fun, therapeutic and is way more exciting then drugs or booze could ever be. With this hobby however comes an element of danger and risk that quite honestly I don’t really think about. Listen, at the end of the day we all do our best to take all the precautions we can to ensure that we don’t get maimed or killed. However there are those times when shit does actually happen, and when this occurs we just hope the outcome is not too severe. Take the driver of this modified Cobra replica for example. He’s roaring down the straight at 130 mph when something in the front suspension breaks and thus causes the car to spin out of control resulting in multiple barrel rolls. Thankfully the driver escaped with minor injuries, but man-o-man does this crash make you think about what can happen.

I guess in the end the cars license plate “?Z2BITE” wasn’t kidding…

It’s no secret that when a bunch of fast cars get together, regardless of the brand, that something bad will usually happen. For the most part drivers are respectful and use common sense, but unfortunately it only takes that one time when good judgement is overridden by ego and adrenaline. This is exactly what happened when a bunch of guys piloting Lamborghini’s got out of control on a public highway. What people tend to forget is that the majority of drivers are simply out on the road going about their daily routine and are not expecting a horde of super cars to come blazing by them at breakneck speeds. Combine that with the fact that these jokers were using all three lanes of traffic and well, the outcome wasn’t hard to predict.
