If you run your car on the race track then you know first hand how punishing it can be on not only the mechanics of the vehicle, but on the paint as well. Rocks and debris can chip and damage your cars finish, as can spilled fluids. Have no fear though because master detailer and car care expert Larry Kosilla of DRIVE CLEAN is here to let you in on a few little tips that will not only extend the life of your cars paint, but protect it during everyday driving as well.

Cars are generally shipped in one of two ways; either via an enclosed trailer, or on the flat bed of an open transport. Nine times out of ten nothing goes wrong, as most shippers are qualified to handle just about any situation. However when things do go wrong, they usually go wrong big. I’ve shipped cars all over the country and in doing so have had my share of ups and downs. I’ve seen clutches blown, exhausts smashed up, as well as some nice dings in my bodywork. In the end though most companies have insurance to cover any damages, but for those that don’t… oh deary me. Take this transporter for instance; on the bed he’s got what looks like a 1968 Plymouth Fury, a car that weighs almost 5,000 lbs. and by the looks of it, it’s held on the ramp via its parking brake only. Therefore it should have come as no surprise to the driver when the big ole’ sled rolled off the ramp and into the Ford pickup that was parked in front of it. Maybe next time he’ll remember to put those wheel chocks under those front tires and avoid another headache.

As painful as it may be to admit, the biggest spectator sport in the United States is in fact, NASCAR. With crowds averaging around 99,000 per event, the NASCAR faithful have cemented themselves in automotive history as the uber fans of American motor sports. As most of you know NASCAR got its roots from the good old days when moonshiners would soup up their transport cars in order to make them fast enough to outrun the revenuers. Those moonshiners then began to brag amongst themselves as to whose car was faster, then a few races ensued and PRESTO – NASCAR was born. Our friends over at RalfBecker.com just happen to take a little side trip to the NASCAR Hall of Fame down in Charlotte, NC whence on their way to the Continental Tire Challenge and Rolex 24 at Daytona Speedway. Up on their arrival they looked around and then interviewed NASCAR historian Buz McKim, who gave them a great history lesson on how the boys of the big ovals came to be.

I’ve always said that, if I could I would own a 3 bedroom house on the water with an attached 10 car garage. Quite honestly, I could care less about the house, in fact as long as there was a clean mattress and some working plumbing in there, I’d be good to go. Some people though are content with just having a one car garage and a few paintings on the wall. Take Holger Schubert for example, he is the Los Angeles, CA resident who won the 2009 Maserati Architectural Digest Design Driven contest for having one of the nicest garages out there. The space itself is probably one of the most pleasing I’ve ever seen. It’s welcoming and truly showcases the automobile as a work of art. Spanning 1,200 square feet, the area contains a large flat-screen TV, built-in book shelve, small kitchen, bathroom and a large storage room. Now, if it was only another 4000 square feet I’d take it in a heartbeat.

I was heading into the grocery store the other night when I saw something that made my jaw drop. A lady, apparently deciding that the cart-return was too far away, decided to give her shopping cart a solid heave… right through the sporadically parked cars in the back half of the lot.

The cart, as Wally-World carts often do, immediately hooked a left into oncoming traffic, causing a guy to slam on his brakes to avoid a collision. The lady, either too callous or too oblivious, pulled away with nary a glance at the narrowly avoided impact.

Now, granted, I was at Wal-Mart; I don’t have high expectations for the patrons. In fact, I saw not one, but two ladies wearing Snuggies as I perused the aisles.

But it certainly got me thinking. Parking lot courtesy (and safety) is sorely lacking. Few other places combine the confusion, frustration and crowds of both pedestrians and vehicles in motion like a modern superstore parking lot.

So as a public-service announcement, I present to you some insights into parking lot manners. These are insights gleaned from years of walking through the loosely-organized chaos that is a Midwest Wal-Mart blacktop – so trust me, I’m an expert.

Those Arrows and Lines Mean Something

Those arrows at lane entrances in parking lots? They mean something. All too often I have to stop to let some clueless driver who is going against traffic by because they don’t realize that the arrows, and the angles of the parking spaces themselves, are setup to guide traffic and keep it flowing.

Even worse are the people who cut across rows of spaces. A slow cautious turn is fine, but these slowpokes are usually driving 55 mph as they blaze a new trail through the white lines.

I Took The Crosswalk Because I Didn’t Want You To Hit Me

Or alternately titled “Slow the F down!” Crossing the gauntlet between a parking lot and the store entrance has become a deadly gamble. Just when you think the coast is clear, a 16-year-old in their parents Suburban comes roaring past the crosswalk, walkers-be-damned.

Parking lots have people walking through them – people who would not like to die before they’re able to complete their purchase.

Return Your Cart, A$$hole

Parking lots have little cart-corrals spread throughout, providing convenient spots to park your cart after you’re finished. So why do they end up randomly strewn about?

I park in the back of the lot on purpose – in a likely misguided attempt at protecting my car from careless door dings. An unfortunate side effect of being alone in the back of the lot is that my car is usually surrounded by abandoned carts by the time I return, which I have to carefully maneuver around as I leave.

It Isn’t A Better Spot if it Takes 30 Minutes to Park

Whats with the obsession over front-row parking spaces? You’re not saving any time if you have to sit for 10 minutes while you wait for someone to unload their packages and back out – and in the meantime, the seven cars behind you are steaming with unspeakable rage because you’re the guy who’s been driving through the lot like a vulture waiting for a prime space to open up. Never mind the fact that you’ve driven past a dozen open spaces. Never mind that I’ve parked, walked through the lot into the store, found my items, completed my purchase and am now walking back out in the time it took you to park. You got that front-row space; you win, buddy.

So there you have it; four common-sense observations on the degradation of our parking lot courtesy. Take heed and learn from the misdeeds of those around you. And if you’re the cause of these fist-clenching acts of obliviousness, may the unsightliness of a thousand door-dings rain down upon your car as it sits in the front-row space you spent 30 minutes searching for.

You’ve got to love the Swiss. First, they make some damn fine chocolate and they live in a stunningly beautiful part of the world. They understand the importance of an armed population, and virtually every Swiss male has a military-issued assault rifle at home. Better yet, they’re actually trained in how to use them, proving once again that an armed society is a polite society.

The Swiss also understand that men will be men, and sometimes need to turn the freak knob up to 12. Police in Zurich grew tired of complaints from red-light district residents about sex in public, so they took a novel approach towards solving the problem: they built three-sided carports where motorists could take prostitutes for a little slap and tickle.

The carports are little more than covered chain link fencing, about six feet high, but they’re enough to give working girls and their customers a little privacy. The idea actually came from the Germans (of course), who adopted a similar strategy to combat prostitution in Essen and Cologne. As for the Swiss police, they see it as accepting the inevitable; said one spokesman, “We can’t get rid of prostitution, so we have to learn how to control it”.

When it comes to car theft and auto burglaries, college towns generally have a higher incidence of both. If you take a step back, it’s easy to see why: targets of opportunity are everywhere, and student union bulletin boards are a great place to sell stuff without any questions. Assigned campus parking is a great place for a thief to go browsing for electronics, and it’s easy for them to spot who drives their car on a regular basis and who doesn’t.

If you want to keep your car and your stuff totally safe, my best advice is “don’t take it to college”. Since that’s not a realistic proposition for most students, here are five suggestions to keep your car, and your stuff, from getting stolen.

Clean out your car before you park it.

Don't leave your car parked like this.

Take your GPS with you, don’t leave your laptop or camera in the trunk and don’t leave your radar detector hanging on a sun visor. I suggest you go a few steps beyond, too: if you use a suction cup mount on your windshield for a GPS or radar detector, use some glass cleaner to erase the rings. Make sure that any power supply cords are well hidden or placed in your glove box. Erase any evidence that you car might have once contained electronic devices, and you make it less appealing to a smash and grab burglar.

If you drive a nice car, think about Lojack.

Lojack's biggest fan...

My best advice would actually be, “buy a beater car to go to college with”, but again, that’s not always an option. If you drive a newer car with OnStar, make sure that the OnStar bill stays paid. If your car doesn’t have OnStar or a similar system, think about adding Lojack. If your car does get stolen, Lojack greatly increases the likelihood that it’ll be found before it’s stripped for parts.

Don’t waste money on car alarms.

Unless your alarm comes with the 'armed response' option...

Seriously, when was the last time anyone paid attention to a car alarm going off? If they’re sensitive enough to detect motion and shock, they’ll trip every time a loud car or bike goes by, or even in a thunderstorm. You’d be better off spending $20 on a do-it-yourself window etching kit to record your car’s VIN (which makes it less attractive to part out), and the old trick of dropping business cards into the door and under the seats doesn’t cost a thing. This won’t keep your car from getting stolen, but it may help police track you down when it’s recovered.

Don’t sink money into nice wheels and tires.

Don't let this happen to you.

If you have a decent set of aftermarket wheels on your car already, think about going back to the stock ones for school. If you sold those as soon as you put on your new hoops, start thinking about another set of stock wheels from eBay. And don’t think that wheel locks are anything more than a minor inconvenience to a thief; every garage in America (and damn near every thief) has a set of master keys for any wheel lock made.

The more inconvenient your car is to steal, the more likely they’ll grab another.

I'd call this 'car security overkill'

Park in well lighted areas, or better yet well lighted areas with functional security cameras. Use an anti-theft device like a steering wheel lock (bonus points if it covers your airbag), and think about using a battery disconnect knob if you park your car for extended periods of time. It’s called “layered security”, and the more of it you use, the safer your car will be. Car thieves are just like the rest of us, who favor the path of least resistance. If your car isn’t it, they’ll move on to find another that is.

Finally, consider full coverage auto insurance if you currently carry liability only. Yes, this will cost you quite a bit more money, but it also covers you if your car does get stolen. Some policies include coverage for the contents of a vehicle, while others don’t. If you have questions, give your insurance agent a call.

I’ll be honest, when I think of Budapest I rarely think of technology and automobiles. It seems however that I’m one of the only ones that doesn’t know about this unbelievably trick parking system that has been incorporated right into the center of the city. Built entirely underground the new system takes parking automation to a whole new level. Gone are the days of parking attendants, scratched up cars and waiting in line to retrieve your car as all of that nonsense has been replaced with a well thought out, beautifully executed new system that removes the human element. Watching the system operate is very impressive, but I’m wondering if it would actually work in an area like New York City where you have a wide variety of cars that come in all shapes and sizes. Then there is the question of cost as this system has to be and unbelievably expensive proposition. Either way though it’s nice to see that someone is thinking outside the box and trying to relieve the parking problem that most urban areas are currently facing.

We all dread the morning after the weather channel predicts “The Storm of The Century”. Who wants to get up twenty minutes earlier than usual just to get the snow off of your car to make your drive to work possible. It’s cold and wet outside so we just do a mediocre job of getting the snow off and rush back inside for a cup of coffee. But everyone has their own technique of getting the snow off the car. Most of us just use a brush or a broom to push the snow off but this guy’s method by far the best yet. If you have any better ideas let us now.
