Clampy

Shitbox, P.O.S., beater, road-turd. Whatever you call them, having an extra car, truck or van that you can modify and flog is one of the greatest joys in all of motoring. This week on Motor Trend’s “Dirt Everyday” we get the inside track on “Clampy”, a 1986 Toyota SR5 pickup that’s been converted into one helluva rock crawler.

The MR2 Connection: Petrolicious

Toyota MR2

I saw my first second generation Toyota MR2 in 1989 and upon first glance, had no idea what it was. Ferrari, Lotus perhaps? Then I saw that little Toyota badge and stood there dumbfounded. How did Toyota build a car like this? It was mid-engine, with some of the best body lines I’d ever seen, and it was literally stopping people in their tracks. This was an under appreciated car back then and even still today. Thankfully though Petrolicious was able to find a small group of Texas based owners who still covet these cars the way they should be.

Prius Hack

It’s sad, but the unfortunate truth is that working on your car at home has become a thing of the past. Today’s cars pack so much technology that unless you have the correct diagnostic equipment in your garage, you’re pretty much screwed. Another point of note is that new technology means new ways to hack into it, as is demonstrated in the following, and quite frightening video. Click through to check it out.

Toyota Prius VS AMC Gremlin: ROADKILL

Gremlin VS Prius

The Toyota Prius and the AMC Gremlin. Two cars that get absolutely no respect in the motoring world. Both are ugly, slow and a joke to just about everyone who lays eyes on them. Motor Trend’s Freiburger and Finnegan recently got both of these sh*t boxes together for a mileage shootout and track challenge and then, in typical ROADKILL fashion, topped it off with a killer (and heavy) ending.

Check it out after the jump.

Ford Fiesta ST vs Toyota GT86: TRACK BATTLE

Ford Fiesta ST

By this time we all know that Toyota GT86 is a little pistol of a car. It’s rear-wheel drive, has a great chassis, and even though it’s only got 197 hp, it’s still hoot to drive. Ford’s new Fiesta ST is also a fun little scoot. It makes more torque than the GT86 and is front wheel drive, but does that mean it doesn’t handle as well? The guys from EVOTV took both budget hot-rods out on the track to see which was more fun and came away with some results that may surprise you.

1989 Toyota Tercel

Ever have a good car that you simply love to hate on? Mine was a 1989 Toyota Tercel like the one you see here and looking back on it, I feel truly guilty about the way I treated it. This car was all about basic transportation, which was something it did quite well and it deserved better than a young adult who simply wanted to beat on it and go fast. If you look at the spec sheet it’s really quite dismal. Power came from a 1.5L I4 that produced 78 hp and 87 lb-ft of torque through a 3-speed automatic with manual overdrive. Mine only had two options – the aforementioned automatic transmission and A/C. Everything else was bargain basement. It had an AM/FM radio with two speakers, crank windows, cloth seats and that was it.

Toyota Supra Rally Car?

Toyota Supra Rally Car

If you were to build a car to compete in the WRC (World Rally Championship), the odds of you choosing something that’s relatively compact with all-wheel-drive would be pretty good. Cars like the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi EVO immediately come to mind, but a late model rear-wheel drive Toyota Supra?!? Hmm… that may not be the best choice. Norway’s Kenneth Moen however not only disagrees, but has set up one of the sweetest Supra’s I’ve ever seen. Click through and get ready to see (and hear) one of the coolest rally cars on the planet!

Low Life VIP Tuning Culture – Japan oni camber

Low Life VIP

There is no question that the stance of a vehicle can make or break its appearance. A car sitting too high on its suspension can look like an elephant on stilts, where one that sits too low can be undriveable. Some folks love the lowered look so much that they’ve resigned themselves to the fact that when modified, they simply won’t be able to drive their cars to various destinations. Are cars like this for everyone? No… they’re not. That doesn’t mean however we can’t appreciate the way they look. Check out the video after the jump.
